Occasionally, there are moments that alter the trajectory of an organization forever. For our church, it was a board meeting in the family room of one of our members—a gathering that would prove to be among the most strategic in our history.

We faced a critical decision: pursue the purchase of five acres to build a brand-new worship center or maintain our status quo. Our church was bursting at the seams, running three services every Sunday on a single acre of land.

Pressure Made Us Choose

Parking had become a nightmare, overflow spilling into a neighboring shopping center’s lot, straining community relationships. It was clear that developing a comprehensive church growth strategy was no longer optional but essential.

As I sat in that meeting, the weight of the moment was palpable—simultaneously intimidating and exhilarating. The potential for a multi-million dollar building project stretched before us, demanding both courage and wisdom.

Our board chose courage. This wasn’t just another administrative decision; it was a declaration of faith in what our community could become if we were willing to take bold steps forward. The atmosphere in the family room was electric—a mixture of anxiety and anticipation that comes with standing at the edge of something transformative.

When Faith Meets Opportunity

What happened next still amazes me. Within weeks of implementing our church growth strategy, a major obstacle that had been blocking our land acquisition suddenly vanished. This breakthrough felt like divine confirmation of our choice to step forward in faith.

We secured five prime acres just ten minutes from the beach and twenty minutes from Perth’s CBD. The location was ideal, but now we faced the daunting challenge of raising millions of dollars to transform this land into our vision.

I’ll be honest—at times I felt ill-equipped for the financial mountain looming before us. The prospect of borrowing money, fundraising campaigns, and selling our existing property was overwhelming. There were sleepless nights and moments of doubt, wondering if we had taken on more than we could handle.

Yet seven years later, we celebrated in our dream facility, marvelling at the generosity of our faith community and God’s faithfulness throughout the journey.

Standing in that completed worship center, watching our congregation worship in a space designed to accommodate our growth, made every challenging moment worthwhile.

The fruit of our church growth strategy has continued to multiply in the 25 years since we moved into the building—a testament to what can happen when bold faith and strategic planning work together.

Prayer Combined with Bold Action

One crucial lesson we learned was the necessity of pursuing dreams prayerfully—soaking every decision in prayer while simultaneously exercising faith, wisdom, and courage.

Major decisions require this delicate balance of seeking divine guidance while taking bold steps forward.

Throughout our land acquisition and building process, we remained consistent in prayer specifically focused on our expansion. Prayer wasn’t just a spiritual formality; it became the foundation that gave us confidence to move forward when obstacles arose.

We discovered that prayer without action leads to stagnation, while action without prayer leads to misalignment. Both elements were essential to our success.

Inclusive Leadership Decisions

Another vital principle in our church growth strategy was involving our entire leadership team in the process. Rather than announcing “God told me to do this,” we brought the board, staff, and key leaders into the journey.

This collaborative approach allowed everyone to contribute, support, and participate in raising both funds and faith levels.

Our architect held a range of meetings with different teams and groups in our church before he began to design. We wanted our church to take ownership of specific aspects of the project.

Church members leveraged their professional expertise in finance, construction, and community relations.

By distributing both responsibility and authority, we created a leadership ecosystem that could sustain the prolonged effort a project of this magnitude required.

This wasn’t just my project

It became our project, a once-in-a-generation shift that has yielded tremendous fruit over the decades since moving into that building. The shared ownership meant that when inevitable challenges arose, we had a diverse team of problem-solvers ready to address them from multiple perspectives.

Transparent Communication

The third lesson was the importance of transparent communication with our congregation. Though our board technically had the authority to make the land purchase decision, we chose to take it to a church-wide vote—twice.

First, we voted on the initial land purchase. Years later, as we approached the point of no return, we held another vote on selling our property and proceeding with construction. Both votes received over 90% approval, reinforcing the value of bringing everyone along on the journey.

Financial pothole

When we hit a significant financial “pothole” during the process—a serious setback that I detail in my upcoming book on financial intelligence for church leaders—we maintained this transparency.

This “pothole” was $500,000 deep. During a members’ meeting, we openly shared our challenge, rallying courage and faith together. This honesty built trust, which is essential when asking people to give sacrificially to a vision.

Our transparency extended to regular progress updates, financial reports, and construction timelines. We celebrated milestones together and faced setbacks as a unified community. This approach transformed potential critics into invested stakeholders who felt personal ownership in the outcome.

Strategic Fundraising

Finally, developing a realistic, rational, and strategic fundraising approach proved crucial to our church growth strategy. People give generously to vision projects they feel connected to and have a sense of ownership in.

Secondary giving programs can successfully raise funds for buildings, missions, renovations, or church planting initiatives when properly structured.

We implemented a multi-phase fundraising strategy that included pledge campaigns, special offerings, and creative fundraising events. Rather than pressuring people, we focused on inspiring them with the vision of what their generosity could accomplish.

We shared stories of life transformation that would be multiplied with expanded facilities.

The key was making the fundraising process as thoughtful and strategic as any other aspect of ministry. We researched best practices, established realistic targets, and created giving opportunities at various levels so everyone could participate regardless of financial capacity.

This comprehensive approach allowed us to raise the necessary resources without creating donor fatigue or compromising our regular ministry funding.

Moving Forward in Faith

This journey taught us that pursuing God-given dreams requires prayer, wisdom, courage, and community. Whether you’re contemplating a building project, expansion, or other significant ministry initiative, remember that transparency builds trust, inclusive leadership cultivates ownership, and strategic planning transforms vision into reality.

What began in a board member’s family room culminated in a facility that has served our community for over two decades— proof that a thoughtful church growth strategy, executed with wisdom and courage, can impact generations.

The building is now debt free and continues to serve our community. And there’s the kicker – my older grandsons go to the youth group in this building. What a joy. What a legacy.
