1. Meditate on Scriptures That Fuel Your Passion for Evangelism

It sounds obvious, but we can’t share what we don’t have.

If we want to see people come to know Jesus, we need our hearts to be stirred with God’s heart for the lost.

My tip? Head straight to the Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

As you read, pay attention to how Jesus interacted with people, listened with compassion, and always pointed them back to the Father.

The book of Acts is another great source of inspiration. Notice how the early church shared the good news with boldness and courage, and how God moved in incredible ways through their obedience.

Here’s a personal tip that’s made a difference in my life: Whenever I encounter an area where I want to grow – whether it’s leadership, prayer, or sharing my faith – I make a point of regularly meditating on scriptures that directly relate to that topic.

It’s amazing how God uses those verses to shape my heart and give me the wisdom and courage to live them out.

2. Ask God for a Supernatural Burden for Souls

I vividly remember attending a pastor’s retreat years ago.

I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary to happen, but as the service ended, I was overcome with a deep burden for the people in my life who didn’t yet know Jesus.

It was as if God Himself met me right there at that moment and placed a fresh burden on my heart.

The truth is, we can’t manufacture a love for the lost. That burden has to come from God himself.

So, make it a regular part of your prayer life to ask God to break your heart for the things that break His heart.

Ask Him to burden you for your neighbours, your co-workers, and even that barista who serves you coffee each morning. You might be surprised by what God does.

3. Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Everyday Opportunities

Here’s the thing about evangelism: it’s not always about delivering a formal Gospel presentation (though there’s a time and place for that, too).

Most of the time, it’s about being present in the moment and recognising the everyday opportunities God gives us to share our faith naturally.

It could be as simple as mentioning you’re going to church on Sunday when someone asks about your weekend plans.

Or maybe you casually talk about a song that you are enjoying lately. I’ve found that when people ask me about my job I can easily weave conversations about faith and leadership into the mix.

Sometimes just being open and honest about your relationship with Jesus is all it takes to spark curiosity and open the door to deeper spiritual conversations down the road.

4. Invest in the Next Generation – It’s Strategic!

Here’s a statistic that’s both challenging and encouraging: a huge percentage of people who embrace Christ do so before they turn 25.

In a recent poll I took in our Grow a Healthy Church Facebook group, 84% came to Christ by their mid 20s.

This means reaching young people with the gospel is not only important – it’s strategic for church growth.

We need to be intentional about inviting our friend’s kids to youth group events, Sunday children’s ministry, or fun church outings.

These settings provide a safe and welcoming environment for young hearts to connect with God and each other.

And you never know – your invitation could be the catalyst for a life-changing decision!

5. Pastors, Don’t Just Talk the Talk – Walk the Walk!

This one’s especially close to my heart as someone who equips and encourages church leaders.

You’ve heard it said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Well, the same principle applies to evangelism. If we want our churches to be passionate about reaching the lost, we need to model that passion from the pulpit outward.

One practical way I’ve done this is by preaching an annual series focused on personal evangelism.

I did this when pastoring, weaving in personal anecdotes and illustrations that make the message relatable and inspire action.

And here’s the secret sauce – when you commit to preaching about sharing our faith, it forces you to live it out even more intentionally in your own life!
